Not trying to be a "me too", but I'll agree that now is a great time to use Firefox. A few years ago there were some sites that didn't load quite as nicely with FF, but I haven't had any issues in quite a while.
Just get used to "favourites" becoming "bookmarks", but you shouldn't have any trouble adapting to that or any of the other slight differences.
I have also heard some really good things about Chrome, especially the speed and lightweight nature of it. I like the add-ons for Firefox though - there are so many neat things. You can even get different themes to make it look more like IE.
You should, however, try fixing IE anyway because, as mentioned, Windows Update relies on it. But I think that one of computers still has IE6 which works fine with the updating...
