A good comparison would be "birthers"--who are about as intelligent as the "her son is her grandson" crew. You could as easily ask--did Obama do anything to warrant the rampant speculation among nut-jobs and conspiracy theorists that he was actually born in Kenya? That is, did he do anything other than make the mistake of having the wrong skin colour and the wrong kind of name?
My point is just this: if you're in politics, you'll be attacked--sometimes the attack is warranted, sometimes it's stupid and unfair. The game is won or lost by how well you handle that reality--and Palin is, frankly, terrible at it.
