I don't think the reporter is that far out of the realm of possibility. The secondary storyline in Dexter often intersects with the main storyline (similar to Lila's story line a couple seasons ago which intersected with Doakes near the end, or Deb's love affair with the Ice Truck Killer intersecting with the main storyline in the first season, or Miguel Prado's storyline intersecting with the main storyline of the Skinner (or vice versa)).
I could see Trinity's son being the shooter - his strange childhood caused him to be a sociopath and covers it up the same way his dad and Dexter do. I could also see it being the reporter as she has shown to be dirty and that really is one of the major secondary storylines the writers are exploring.
Either way, I'm sure the writers will work it in somehow... if not, I guess they run the risk of having one less viewer.
