They might have THOUGHT there was an air conditioning problem, but it was the air temperature at 30,000 feet (~ -80C?) seeping in to the cabin through the leak.
The plane flew twice as far as it was supposed to, it only crashed after running out of fuel. The plane was also flying in a square, making right hand turns every set interval. Supposedly auto-pilot automatically does this if the system (that runs through the pilots) losses radio contact.
Kind of comforting in a way. Planes are so well built that even after all on board are frozen solid the plane will still fly in a circle all on its own for hours until it is out of fuel!!! That is insane...
Soon, when planes completely fly themselves, you could have planes landing with all on board dead from some other random problem! eek!
