Yeah you can't use just any phone, it would have to be a GSM phone since I would assume they haven't changed their CDMA side of their network at all.
A good portion of GSM phones can be unlocked, and lots of HSPA+ phones are sold in an unlocked state.
On Rogers they don't care so you can buy a SIM card and put it in your dishwasher if it had a SIM card slot as long as you pay your bill.
Telus/Bell have been used to having a death grip on what handsets are on their network, so I'm curious if you can just get any unlocked phone and use it.
