I believe in shows like Judge Judy, each side has to sign a document binding them
to the verdict given.
They get something like $1,000 each for appearing on the show, then there is an
additional $5,000 pot. The winner takes from the pot.
In JFK's example, the winner got $3,000 + $1,000 for showing up, total $4,000.
The loser got $1,000 for showing up, signing the papers, etc.
As for why he would do that? Well, he's out $30,000 already on lawyers, you think
he wants to pay more to more lawyers? He took his chance on a national and
well watched TV show to clear his name, now when someone says he raped her,
he beat her, and whatever else, he can pull out the recording and say, "Here,
watch for yourself." He probably got to humiliate her a bit too.
