They're definitely getting better, don't get me wrong, but IMO American cars are still built in a semi-disposable fashion compared to their Japanese and even German counterparts.

I dont think anyone keeps, or plans to keep vehicles that long anymore. I have a 1979 Ford Truck, and 84 Mustang, I cant imagine any brand new vehicle lasting that long.
My sister's 02 Jetta is already junk and my friend's 06 Avalanche has more Injured Reserve time than Peter Forsberg.
Not to say that the Fords are of some incomparable quality, but more that new vehicles are built to be junked within 5 years.
