Question #11 a) on a Standard auto insurance application :
Will the automobile be rented or leased or used for carrying passengers for compensation or hire, or for carrying explosives or radioactive material? If so provide details.
It is a liability issue. The insurance company needs to know what exactly they are insuring and what is being discribed is a commercial risk and I am sure that the OP is not paying commercial rates that reflect this material change in risk. If anything happens the insurance company has grounds to deny the claim. Technically even if you are using your vehicle to transport kids to hockey and are not being compensated for it you should still notify your broker as this increases the potential liability. This kind of thing goes on all the time (pizza delivery guys, newspaper delivery guys, contractors etc.etc.) and it puts the insurance company at a disadvantage as they don't really know what they are insuring. If you do call your broker and they say it is no big deal make sure to get it in writing and better yet get them to let you know who they consulted with on this at the insurance company underwriting and/or claims department level at the actual company that will either pay or deny potential claims. It sounds anal but that is the way most of the insurance wordings are written and applied.
