Here's a Samsung 27" monitor with a good S-PVA panel for $800.

It looks like for now Apple has the only IPS LED desktop monitor, good for Apple as they have always prided themselves on their screens but my $530 laptop also has a LED screen and yes it's nice, so they shouldn't have the only ones for long.
