That's nothing! Above-mentioned-almost-crippled dachshund cost us $4500 of money we didn't have at the time. But I'd do it all again, despite some friends and relatives suggesting the "Lassie solution". She's doing pretty good five years later.

When she's running around like an idiot I warn her that she's already used up her once-per-lifetime surgery card, and that she'll be sporting a shiny new wheelie cart if she hurts herself again. I wish I was kidding.

Of course, we didn't insure that dog... our second dog is insured, but knowing the way insurance works, when you're covered you'll never need to call upon it, but when you're not, something big will go wrong. Murphy's law.

PS - hopefully your dog's recovery goes well. It is so hard to see them out of commission like that.
