I just got back from the Rockyview hospital. About half the ICU beds are occupied by people with H1N1 today. We are very early in this process and the number of patients requiring that level of support is going to increase. It is going to change the way that we are able to provide health care in all likelihood for the duration of flu season. Even if only one person in a thousand in Calgary requires ICU support that is 1,000 people.
Each one of those people got H1N1 from someone else. I understand the people who say that it is their choice to get vaccinated and that they are not convinced by the evidence that this decreases their risk of having a harmful outcome ( although I do not believe that). I'll be getting my immunization tomorrow if at all possible.
Each person who has H1N1 is a link in a chain of people. Some people in that chain are going to end up very sick or dead. Why not help break those links by getting vaccinated.
