I don't know why white people are looked down on for listening to rap. No, I've never hung out in Compton, never shot anyone, don't own a 'fo 'fo, and I don't have a rival gang trying to kill me. But who cares? Music is music. I love the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, but I've never been on a big boat, never been shipwrecked, never lost a loved one to a shipwreck... But I'm perfecly ok to like music like that.
So are black gangsters allowed to like white music? Are they allowed to rock some Metallica in their '64 impala with hydraulics? Or is music a barrier between us and them? I love MJ. His greatest hits album never leaves my disc changer. Is it ok for a white boy like me to listen to MJ because he's not gangster?
Does one have to be a fat biker to like blues? I used to go to the King Eddy (and made double sure not to bump into people), just to hear these bearded bikers rock out. Didn't make me want to be a biker, I just liked the sound.
Am I ok to go to David Wilcox tonight? Of course I am. He's a good old white boy from Canada. What about the Brad Paisley concert I went to in February? I've never lived in the country, am I ok to like country music?
