To be fair, I really don't think the makers are ever trying to re-create the first one or trying to out-do the first one. I think they know they won't be able to make something better. Rather than try to fail to duplicate the first movie, they have taken it 10 steps further. By comparison, Jigsaw is an amateur in the first move than what his master plan is in the sequels. The simplicity is what made the first one so great and we really hadn't seen a movie like that before. It was so edgy and fresh. Sure there have been movies where the killer is trying to get the same point across like Jigsaw(John Doe is Seven immeadiately comes to mind) but James Wan totally put a different spin on the vigilante type killer. That's why number one is so damn good.
