As soon as you said sure I would take that as "plans to meet" and she called to apologize about breaking them.

That again sounds like you are indicating you thought you had plans, and now she feels bad because she had asked you in the first place and now isn't going to make it.
In both those cases it just sounded to me like they were being considerate.
But then again, you didn't take it that way and you were there so maybe it just didn't translate into your telling of the tale.
