When I was about 10 my mom showed me how to use the washer and dryer and the stove and the fridge. Basically told me that from then on, if I wanted clean clothes, that's where I'd get them. Breakfast and lunch were my own responsibility. If I wanted mac&cheese, make it myself.
At the time I thought she was a bit of a bitch, but in retrospect, I'm glad. I'd hate to be one of those helpless losers that needs his mom or his wife to do everything for him.
I've got a buddy that can't iron. Or says he can't. I don't know what's so difficult or intimidating about an iron. If you don't like ironing, don't buy shirts that require it. But it's impossible to "not know how to iron". When he says that, what he really means is "I'm too lazy to do it, so I'll make my g/f do it for me".
