What experiances have people had with cross border shopping>

Does anyone know how much duty would have to be paid on furniture? I have checked the border agency site and didn't find anything specific.

I know if it's made in the States or Mexico it's "duty free" but what does that mean? Do you then only have to pay the 5% GST to bring it into Canada?

Thanks in advance for your opinions/suggestions!
I have a place in the fish. Duty free, you only pay GST above your allowable limit. If you're down for the weekend, 48 hours, you are allowed $400 per person. When we cross, we only state the total for our family. Sometimes we get asked if any item was above $400, sometimes we don't.
