Those things cost ~$135 these days. A buddy of mine has had three of them stolen in the past two years.
But yeah, as Ken said, keep it. It's yours forever. You can put it on whatever trailer you're towing. It's connected directly to your driver's license. If you get tickets on it, you won't be able to renew your registration until you pay them off. Doesn't matter what you're towing, you can pretty much put it on anything (within reason, pretty sure a 53' semi trailer needs a certain plate).
