Survived a harrowing drive home from Canmore yesterday - BEFORE my winter tires were installed (that happens on Tuesday). Eastbound #1 at Lac Des Arcs was parked for 50-60 minutes - y'know, those curves where the speed reduces to 95? Anyway, after we got crawling through - WOW. Jacknifed trailers, minvan collision with semi trailer, car onto the other side of the road. Crazy stuff. Saw two more accidents with emergency vehicles and ditched cars on WB #1 on the drive home, as well as some yahoo who spun out on the #1 exit to NB Stoney Trail.
I adjusted for the driving conditions - only on the dry highway near Cochrane did I actually go 110 - in my sports car with summer performance tires and made it through fine. Tires will never replace a sensible head on your shoulders.
That said, I will feel better when my winter tires are installed next week. Only $1,400 with winter rims.
