Usually that's what people want - someone to complain to and get sympathy. Nobody actually wants advice, we're all just looking for a mommy or daddy to make baby feel better when we're cranky. Pretend to care for a while until they run out of bitchin' material, then make up some psychobabble like, "I know you can make it through this, I've always thought you were strong enough to do anything you had a mind to" and they'll go away happy.
Of course, when someone comes to me, I'm more likely to use negative reinforcement as a motivator instead: "You're worthless and weak! Come back to me when you've grown a spine, you pathetic dribble of diseased hobo sperm! You make me VOMIT!" On the minus side, you can lose some friends this way... but on the plus side, who wants whiny needy friends that are always interrupting important things like hockey games for long sessions discussing their feelings?
