The favourite comment I get from people that know I'm a hockey nut is

I get that too, and it bugs me.
I think the reason is that it sort of implies that we were unhappy without hockey, like we rely on hockey and hockey alone to keep us happy.

Damn. You hit the nail on the head. That's exactly it! Because during the lockout I always got the comment "Man you must be really sad without hockey".
That also bugged me a lot. Chumps.
