What was your method for fishing for Lake Trout? It's my experience that Mackinaw (lake trout) feed on the bottom and the best luck I've had is with a big chunk of whitefish on a white jig. Let it go to the bottom and then just raise it up and down a few inches every couple of seconds.
I've never been pike fishing but I know they get huge up there. Looks like a blast, something I'd love to do with my Dad and my son!

A lot of people jig for Lake Trout and we have in the past. For some reason we never tried it this trip.
We used these devices called Dipsy Divers. Basically they are like a poor mans Down rigger. It is just a planer board that you hook to you line that take your lure really deep, really fast. Then you tie your lure 18" or so behind the diver and start trolling. We were catching them in usually about 50-80 feet of water and they were biting on all types of spoons or spinners.
Unfortunately I only caught one, so I am not one to give advice. But Goinalltheway, and my Brother caught quite a few of them like that.
That would be a great trip for your son and Dad to go on. 10 different lakes to choose from. The 2 I have been to were spectacular.
