Mix of both really, one feeds the other and eventually, 95% of the music sounds the same. But if you look back even to different music eras (not just rock, but even to the romantic era, classical etc) a lot of the things that sounded musically aesthetic to the ear and similar things that the music industry targets now.

Its music, but its also a business. Hard to argue with the dollar figures.
