I don't think expectations from the masses have changed much at all over the decades actually. The Beatles' music is about as fundamental as it gets, but they were idolized more than anyone (note this is my immediate frame of reference since I've been playing Beatles Rock Band lol). Even in the 50s, with the likes of Doris Day, Paul Anka, the entire Rat Pack etc., their music isn't complex by any means. Dunno how music was previous to that, but I doubt it's much different either.
