Good for you, I think this is the best thing to do in these situations. Taunt em, make em madder without working yourself up. It's far more enjoyable and doesn't put you offside. A buddy of mine licks his lips, winks, and laughs anytime someone flips him one. Drives the other guy insane, or at least stuns em.
