My dad raises pack mules, and they're weird creatures. I know for a fact that they hate dogs, and won't hesitate to take them out.....he has a border collie with one eye and no teeth to prove it. Coyotes won't come anywhere near his farm, probably because they fear for their lives.
They love people though; they'll run up to you and rub you like a cat looking for a scratch, then turn around and try to kill your dog. So yeah, even though the story might not be true I'm pretty sure any mule wouldn't hesitate to try and take out a cougar.
