If you call the owner of a reputable liquor store, they will often not only give you a discount, but take returns on the unopened bottles. Double up your order, and return what is not used. Simple as that.
My wedding cost me about $7,500 in booze (open bar, includes gratuities) for an event that ran from about 4 to 2 a.m.. There were 200 or so invites, with about 160 drinkers, with forty of those people heavily drinking. I had some friends throw out their cards and order shooters (they asked the hotel to get assorted bottles and had staff handing out shots of assorted things). The hotel charged a premium on everything. I likely could have done the same in my own home by purchasing at a liquor store for about $2000.
