Now, whenever I shake a man's hand, I use a pretty firm, non-bone-crushing grip. I don't know why, but I feel strange when it is returned with a wimpy and flimsy greeting.

The other day, I shook a woman's hand who was running a fund raiser for a sick friend. When it comes to women, I offer zero firmness, almost a " how do you do, m'lady" kind of shake.

I was returned with a hand crusher that would have put a car salesman to shame.

I quickly tried to recover and add a little manliness to the grip but it was too late; she had withdrawn. I sold myself short by being a gentleman and am now possibly seen as girly in her eyes. I felt like Costanza after getting out of the pool.

How do you shake a woman's' hand?
