Inaudible was because the umpire was talking to him at the time. Probably saying something like "Be quiet, I've made my decision," to which Federer says "Don't tell me to be quiet..." and so forth.

I agree partially, especially for a few points after that line call. However, Federer showed great mental strength to stick with his guns, powering his forehand and going for backhands that ultimately kept missing. I think the biggest example of his mental strength is on the last championship point. He worked so hard to hit that forehand slice to return Potro's monster forehand, but again, it just was not his day as he made another UE on a routine backhand.

To me, that shows he fought for every single point. It would've been easy to give up on a lot of those Del Potro forehands, but he did the best he could considering he could not put a ball into the court. He worked hard to win some 50% of his points on his 2nd serve, where a lot of players would just mentally check out when their opponent is jumping all over the serve.

I think the mental strength is still there, and that'll allow him to challenge for slams, even as the physical part slowly fades away.

Btw, huge gratz to Potro. His forehand was monstrous today, and it'll be interesting to see how consistent he can make it. Usually he sprays a lot of errors when he hits huge forehands, and usually they don't clip the baseline with the frequency that they did. What a fun US open.
