Sometimes one, sometimes the other, and sometimes both. Sometimes I don't relate to the music at all, but can still enjoy it from the point of view as an observer of the art.
Can you relate to all of the hard rock and alternative songs you listen to? I sure can't, but still listen to a lot of that stuff too.
I can't relate to the movie Kill Bill either, but still enjoyed it without being a savage killer, and I can enjoy an NWA song without being a gangsta.
