Based purely on looks, my ideal car is an early 90s BMW e30 (3 series) or a MB 190e....I just love their simple clean lines....but not sure if by now they would result in a lot of mechanical issues. I'd like something sporty and refined, but reasonably reliable!

I highly recommend the BMW e46 3 series, this is years 2000-2005 or so. I drive a 2001 330CI and absolutely love it. Such a joy to drive, every feature I need, room for 5 people, good storage space and looks beautiful IMO. You could likely pick up a 4 door version for around 15K or drop down to a 325 or 323 and save some $.
