Was that for a seagate drive in a white and/or black macbook or Mini, by any chance? If so, that replacement occurred because there was a batch of hard drives that had a problem with the read/write heads detaching. I've seen it happen to at least 3 machines, one of which was my Mac Mini.
The optical drives in Mac laptops are problematic - I dunno why, but they just seem to be more finicky that conventional tray load units. Hopefully a cleaning is all this one needs.
