It is pretty simple. Many NCAA players come out of college without degrees or with crappy degrees that don't pay good money. Rather than start their professional life right away, they'll agree to come up to the CFL and play here. Guys like Nik Lewis are a perfect example. He attended Southern Arkansas University (didn't graduate) but was far too small and not skilled enough to make it in the NFL. He went undrafted in 2003 didn't even get a single NFL tryout. He'd rather come up to Canada and make seventy grand Canadian a year playing in the CFL than make thirty thousand a year as a short order cook at a Denny's in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Any NCAA player who graduates with a proper degree from a reputable Division IA college can easily make more money working in an office than he can in the CFL. Forget love of the game. People have mouths to feed and other financial commitments. I'd love to go and play soccer down in Australia. I have financial commitments that keep me working a real job here in Calgary.
