I doubt that the British Navy would be able to run the gauntlet of American carrier battle groups and submarines.
It would be more likely that the Russian's would intervene both to gain the resources in the Arctic and Western Canada and to gain a strategic foothold in North America, and they would have a much easier route for their bombers and troops over the arctic and through Alaska.
If you ever want to see a true nuclear scenario, an invasion of Canada would probably trigger it.
And . . . if the Russians did come to our "aid" they would never leave, we would become a garrison state .
Anyone who thinks that an American invasion of Canada would be easy is fooling themselves. In a lot of ways Canada is a lot like Afghanistan, lots of wide open spaces for mine fields, lots of choke points in the mountain regions, and the key strategy to defend this nation is the same as the Russians used in the second world war, try to kill as many American's as possible while denying them access to resources. That means blowing pipelines, irradiating mines and fields.
Personally if I was wargaming this, beyond the resource destruction and mining open areas, I would place mass artillary on the B.C. border and shell the crap out of Seattle and Portland, personally I would also poison all rivers heading into the states that supply the U.S. with water.
