My wife lent her car out and the guy got in accident (car was written off) back in 1999.

Neither one of us owned a vehicle until two years ago and insurance agencies continued to quote us $3,000 range for insurance as we haven't had enough consecutive years of insurance. That would put our insurance payment above our car payment. =[

It wasn't until we tried Co-Operators where our insurance ending up being $1,600.

I think it's a good idea to shop insurance rates every single time you are up for renewal. I use a calender to make sure the misses and I shop two months ahead of the policy renewing.
