There has to be more to this story - did the guy just stare uncomprehendingly at the juice as it sat there and drained away? How did it drain into the light fixture, anyway - generally there is something called a "floor" which is physically present between one level and another.

IANAL, but I'd say it comes down to if the guy spilling the juice could have taken reasonable measures to prevent the spillage getting anywhere, and if it's reasonable to expect that he could have forseen it going between floors and damaging something in the room below. Spilling liquid directly onto someone's laptop is one thing, this is entirely another.
