Tabata is awesome. IMO, its harder than HIIT, but I don't know about which is more effective.

Yeah, tabatas are great. Crossfit uses tabatas as well. Why limit yourself to one though? Use them both. It is good to cycle your training to avoid/break through plateaus...typically once you are out of the novice phase though...
