Tabata is awesome. IMO, its harder than HIIT, but I don't know about which is more effective.

If I remember correctly the leg press (being a machine), will also only work the larger muscles (may also not be full range of motion which is important) and not any core or stabilizing muscles, leading to muscle imbalances which will usually lead to injuries as well.
