If 2 of the answer were taken away, I think the odds of guessing correctly then become greater than 50% no? Or is that just with 3 choices, and one removed?

It's 3:1 odds. If 2 of the answers are taken away, it's still a 50:50 shot. You're thinking of the Monty hall problem where you pick an answer, then all, but one of the answers are taken away and you are asked if you want to stick or change your answer. Then it's better to change your answer.
Still, he's not getting the proper odds and even if he were, it's a ridiculous amount of money to gamble with.
