I dont blame the guy in the least for not taking a cell or checking emails.

Other than the occasional work email I dont check personal email at all when I am on holidays. Some people like to pretend on holidays that they are free from all that and they will deal with the possible 100's of emails in the inbox when they return. 1/2 of which is likely Euro porn spam.

Also, not taking a phone. He is backpacking through Europe, why do you need to take a phone, its just another chain.

Also, why would the mother have the gf's phone number. Why would your parents need that number unless things are marriage time serious.

Also, I think his friends did know, she makes mention that his friends are such bs'ers - they likely told her when she called "listen you crazy hoe he is in Europe for 2 weeks" and she thought his friends were asinine and so didnt believe them.
