I have also had a bad U-haul experience. Rented a van on my credit card for a girlfriend who was moving. They told us we could return it after hours by dropping the keys in the slot (which was about one foot above ground level, oddly enough).
Dropped the van off that evening, put the keys in the slot.
The next day they called and left a message for me saying the van was in the lot, but they couldn't find the keys.
Two days later, the van went missing and they sent the police to my house to interrogate me. They told the police the van was NEVER returned to them. Thankfully, I saved the message from the next day confirming the van was still in the lot. That's the only thing that got me off the hook. They have this stupid freakin' drop slot that's about two feet off ground level. Anyone could have take a coat hanger and scooped up any keys that were dropped there and then returned for the vehicle. I think it was probably one of their own staff members who took the keys. Who knows....but if I didn't have that message saved on my phone that clearly stated the van was on their lot that day...they are inept. I will never rent from them again either. I can't believe they are still in business.
