40 yards is 36 meters. I don't doubt that a lot of these guys can get off quick and get that far. But pretty much all of them can't sustain that speed past 40 yards. Realistically in football, it's how quick a player can get those first 15 yards to gain the inital advantage, and for corner backs closing speed to make up that difference.
Just because a football guy can run 36 meters in 4.4 seconds doesn't mean he'd keep it up to run 100 in under 10. If football players had to run 60 meters those times probably increase a fair bit, and a lot of lineman probably get a DNF. And, yeah, it's likely a few of those times get exagerated too.
