In the Innovator/Humanitarian category I pick Jackie Robinson.
I'm not the world's biggest baseball fan, but his story has always struck me as one of the craziest things. My dad was alive when Jackie made his debut in major league baseball. This blatant "you can't play because you are black" thing they had going on is only one generation removed from me and it's almost difficult to believe. It was only 62 years ago.
Anyway, enough of my nonsense. Here's a little info about the guy...
He was a poor kid who kicked ass at sports, which is a real surprise to everyone I'm sure. He played both catcher and shortstop on the high school baseball team, which must have taken remarkable speed and stamina.
His brother won a silver medal at the Olympics in 1936, likely pissing Hitler off even more.
He went to UCLA and was primarily a football player. He later joined the Army after Pearl Harbor and got dicked around because he was black. Apparently Joe Louis had something to do with him eventually getting into officer training. He was eventually honorably discharged, even though he went through some crazy military hassle because he wouldn't, literally, move to the back of a bus.
Yada yada yada. We all know the story. He was a cool dude. We're all sports fans too and we all know what a farce professional sports would be if they had any sort of ridiculous arrangement like he faced.
