Incidentally, for those keeping score at home, there have been exactly four Chief Justices of Canada since 1973. McLachlin has served the post since 2000, while Lamer served from 1990 until his retirement in 2000. His predecessor, Dickson, retired in 1984. Bora Laskin served previous to that, and died in office.
In fact, looking through the names and biographies, the most recent Chief Justice to resign was Sir Charles Fitzpatrick in NINETEEN EIGHTEEN. Reason for his resignation? He became the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec.
