My wife and I went to India in March of 2007, we got our Visa's from the office in Vancouver in about 2 weeks after we mailed it out.
We didn't hit up any of the far north areas, farthest north was Amritsar in Punjab. But we hit a lot of the other spots doing all the travel via train:
-Delhi
-Agra
-Varanasi
-Mumbai
-Jalgon (Buddhist caves nearby)
-Goa
-Amritsar
We covered all of this ground in 26 days in country. Longest stay was 5 days in Amritsar, followed closely by 4 days on a beach hut in Goa.
