Depends what you are after.
A new, smaller cc bike aimed at beginners can be had for a few thousand. Then... basically the skies the limit. Most japanese brands are affordable, the Harleys can get quite expensive, same goes with the high end Italian bikes.
If you are thinking about getting into motorcycling as an adult, and have no experience whatsoever, I would maybe look at getting something like a Honda Rebel.
250cc, they are cheap, cheap to insure, and make a great learner bike. I wouldn't even bother buying new as you can find these things everywhere in the classifieds for dirt cheap. And if you found one that has been taken care of, and continue to do so, they will last forever.
Also, I would recommend taking the MSF course like oilers_fan did. There is tons of valuable info to be learned.
