That happened to my xbox a while ago. Its a known problem with the 360s. I think it was either the dvd drive or motherboard, can't remember which. I was within the warranty period and had it replaced through Microsoft. It might be worth calling them and see what they say, although I think you're outside of the warranty period, they might be able to fix it for less than it would cost to buy a new one. The repaired xbox would come with full warranty I believe.
