Yep, Matt Stone and Trey Parker brought up a good point in a 2-part episode of south park called 'go god go'.
Yet, while it does seem that humanity will always fight about something, I think there comes a point where in order to move beyond the violence caused by distrust and hatred, we need to let go of blind faith in religion where it contradicts with having us respect other people's individual rights and freedoms. We need to work against the strangle hold that radicals take on religion.
I do not personally belong to any religious belief system, but I totally understand that there is a need for it in some people's lives. But the world needs to follow the model in Canada and other countries where we live in a mosaic of peoples that adhere to rules about respecting other people. We respect group and cultural rights, but in this country, individual rights trump all.
