Also, it's easier for the existing Mod team to moderate these new troll posts by simply reporting them.

Bingo. The problem with a lot of what most people call garbage posts and threads end up with 20 responses right off the bat- people trying to post how much they don't like that thread. Whereas if people just rated the thread 1 star and left it alone it would quickly drop off to the 2nd page and never be seen again.
