I don't mean to be a dick, but that's not entirely true. I know a number of people who got into either the military or police force due to the fact that a lot of other opportunities were closed off to them. I would also hazard a guess that this is even more true in the U.S., where some of the standards for recruitment aren't nearly as high. This is why you'll often see a high number of recruitment/enlistment in the poorer areas of the country.
