Did you read through the entire thread? I ask because I think I at least made an attempt to explain this earlier. You might not actually be looking for information here, but I wonder where we all get our ideas that equal must mean treated exactly the same way in everything. The two aren't the same thing.
The Qu'ran says in more than one place that men and women are to be treated equally; as different parts that complement each other. If people choose to ignore that, in my mind, that would be a corrpution of the religion rather than following it.
Not to mention that in the West/Christian world we have our own mores and ideas about how women should dress and yet no one gets upset about them.
In the case of hijab, all the Qu'ran says is the both men and women should be modest, and for some (not all) women, covering up to varying degrees is an expression of that modesty.
